Jay Spence

CEO & Founder
Uprise
Uprise was founded by Dr. Jay Spence, a clinical psychologist, who treated patients with work-related stress or depression. It became apparent that by the time that many people came to see him it is was too late to treat them back to a full recovery. Many patients arrived in crisis with complex problems that made recovery time prolonged and emotionally difficult.

He began to look at early intervention approaches and was fortunate to be part of one of the first online treatment clinics established in Australia. Dr. Spence completed his PhD thesis on adapting face-to-face therapies to be delivered online in the shortest amount of time possible. His PhD research became the basis for Uprise.

Companies are in a unique position to be able to support their community of workers because taking care of them means better output from the community as a whole. Our aim is to facilitate that by bringing the best that psychology has to offer in the most accessible and engaging format possible.

Australian Centre for Field Robotics

Hardware
Field robotics involves the development of autonomous and intelligent systems to perform tasks that are unsafe, inefficient or difficult for humans to perform. Field robotics is the most challenging type of robotics R&D because of the requirement for the systems to work in all weather and terrain conditions 24/7. The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) is located within the University of Sydney and was established in 1997. There are over 130 researchers and engineers working in the Centre, making it one of the largest in the world.
The ACFR is recognised internationally for its world-leading research, industry engagement and research commercialisation. As one of the largest robotics research institutes in the world, its projects include autonomous and intelligent systems in agriculture, commercial aviation, mining, defence operations, weed detection, the management of livestock, feral animals and native fauna; and intelligent underwater, land and space vehicles.
The ACFR has partnered with major national and international agencies in academia, government and industry, and has established a number of leading research centres. The ACFR has substantial experimental facilities including three laboratories and a field test site, a range of experimental and production vehicles, industry-quality mechanical and electrical design and fabrication facilities, and employs the latest in embedded computing, sensing and control technologies.
Our agricultural team develops systems combining robotic technology with data analytics to support sustainable agriculture practices, harvesting and food processing operations, and farm-to-table supply chain optimization. Our intelligent systems automate many of the previously labour-intensive farming and processing operations, vastly improving efficiency, yield and worker safety, and moving towards enabling selective harvesting. We have experience developing systems for locally grown crops including apples and pears, mangos, almonds and macadamias, cotton, grains and leafy vegetables.

BCAL Diagnostics

Medical Diagnostics
BCAL Diagnostics aims to shift the paradigm in breast cancer screening and diagnosis by introducing a blood test for detection of the disease. This means that the technology will allow access to more women, anywhere in the world, who could provide a blood sample, at a time and place of their convenience. Such a test would fit into a woman's routine health regime and be incorporated into their personal lifestyle.
